COUCH POTATOES LIVE LONGER?

This article marks the untimely passing of another professional athlete, this time Ex-NFL great Bubba Smith at 66 years old. Here is an excerpt of the story: "Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith (February 28, 1945 – August 3, 2011) was an American actor and athlete. He was a professional football player in the 1960s and 1970s who became an actor in the late 1970s. He was well known for his height of 6 ft. 7 in (2 m)." (You may remember him as Officer Hightower from those silly "Police Academy" movies.)
You might be surprised at Bulba's early passing because it seemed that he took pretty good care of himself, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Why? Because of a stunning fact I learned a while ago and that is, "Couch Potatoes live longer than athletes!" That's right, and that's exactly the opposite of what we would expect, right?
The fact is, that professional athletes live on average 10 - 13 years less than a couch potato (someone who exerts as little effort as possible). Astounding, isn't it? I was initially very unhappy to hear this, because although I am not a professional athlete, I work out hard to stay in shape and I expect to die later, not sooner! And it was distressing to learn that the thing that shortens a professional athletes life was probably shortening my life too (and maybe yours)!!!
This brings us to the big question, "Why does a couch potato live longer?" It's because professional athletes do something while participating in and practicing for their sport that is literally killing them. What is it? They sweat! That's right, they sweat! Something that we all think is good, cleansing and a sign of working out properly, is actually killing them (and us, for those of us who sweat regularly, for any reason).
Why does sweating cause someone to die sooner? Well, contrary to what we've been led to believe, sweat isn't just water and salt, it's actually a "soup" of all our essential minerals. And the more we sweat, the more we lose these essential minerals and if we don't replace them, we suffer deficiency diseases that shorten our lives (and make us miserable with degenerative diseases until we do die).
Astounding, isn't it? Something as simple as sweating can eventually kill you before your time? Well, it does and will, unless you do something very specific to replace everything you're losing through your perspiration. "Gatorade" won't save you, because that's primarily colored "sugar & salt water" that only replaces two of the 60 essential minerals you are sweating out. And, as I alluded, it's not only athletes and exercisers who are "sweating out the good stuff", it's anyone who perspires on a regular basis; cooks, bakers, construction workers, landscapers, lifeguards, etc.. You name it, if they're sweating and not replacing everything that they lose, they are perspiring themselves into an early grave.  :-(
So, now that I know this, have I sworn off all exercise and glued my butt to the couch? No, as tempting as that is, I still exercise, but now I continually replace everything I'm losing, so that once again I can be on track to living a very long, very healthy life! :-)

P.S. By the way, for you couch potatoes, don't rejoice too loudly, because you are also dying before your time. Our genetic potential is to live to 120 and you are only living to 75.5 on average and one of the biggest reasons is because you are suffering from  nutritional deficiencies too, but you're just taking a little longer to expire.
